POSTERITY BECKONS WITH SOLITUDE

1 FEBRUARY 2005, INDIAN NEWSLINK

Forget those futuristic science-fiction movies that speak about people living, walking and working in space-those are fantasy, down here on earth, loneliness would grip most humans with relationships getting pedestrian, even ludicrous.

Progress comes with a price which men and women would pay for - each heart and soul would become a segregated identity, craving for love and care-these would be rare.

Surely these are scary thoughts. That’s what a young director believes to be in store for mankind in his forthcoming movie, Memories of Tomorrow.

If the title is curious, so is that of his company (Unkreative) and its production -with zero money in the kitty to start with-none of its actors, crew and others connected was paid-and yet the passion with which they went about their work was inspiring.

Amit Tripuraneni, the man behind it all stays cool, and expresses it in almost every breath-there are no trappings of a director or anxiety of the movie getting ready to hit the screen next month.

Says he: “Memories of Tomorrow is an action thriller set in Auckland in an unspecified future. It is the first digital feature in New Zealand (shot on 25p technology).”

This ‘no budget’ movie was shot over 20 days over the weekends, over five months, with locations ranging from Auckland, Bethells Beach, Desert Road and Te Awamutu rock formations.

And to add to its market value, Memories of Tomorrow is about two assassins who escape from the past and adopt the kiwi lifestyle (sounds like Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1975 Jack Nicholson thriller The Passenger). It features John (Richard Thompson), a man looking for his past and Tanya (Rachel Gilchrist) who is keen to look away from it. A mysterious stranger (Ray Trickitt) triggers a series of events, which eventuate a meeting between their future and past together.

The film brought together a number of debutantes including Amit as director (who has also written and scripted it), Lance Wordsworth (Director of Photography) apart from many of the cast.

Andhra-born Amit is a movie buff but found his comfort zone behind the camera. Completing a course in film and television production at Auckland’s South Seas Film and TV School, he has given vent to his creative outburst in seven short films, going through various aspects in film-making.
