Memories of Tomorrow

August 2005, Extraordinary Movie & Video Guide

Esa Linna

John and Tanya are living happily together in New Zealand, despite that John experiences really bad nightmares. Tanya tries to calm him, but John doesn't recall anything from his past. One day unknown man called Roger walks into their life, and when the secrets start to reveal, there's no turning back.

Debut direction of New Zealand filmmaker Amit Tripuraneni is amusing and inspired proof that one can make a film with DV camera and shoestring budget, that still looks breathtakingly great - and not cheap. The use of natural light and colours are handled perfectly, making a professional look in the film. Of course, it is not only the looks that make a good movie. Luckily Tripuraneni has written a script, that is interesting and does not try to reach the skies. Paying attention to limitations of low budget is something that most microcinema makers should do, before starting a project.

Despite Tripuraneni is definitely one of the best microcinema directors out there, it is always actors and actresses who can either save or sink the film. The lead couple Rachel Gilchrist and Richard Thompson - with Ray Trickitt in supporting act - take care that the viewer gets interested of well-written characters. There is almost nothing to complain about acting. Some Thompson's most emotional scenes are in the border of overacting, but like I said: only in the border. Otherwise the characters and their reactions to radical changes of their lives are so natural and believable, that you can't do much more than shake your head after the end credits stop Particurarly Gilchrist shows her ability to transform from sensitive - fragile, even - to cool and cold-hearted. But if I go on, I will reveal too much of the script.

Amit Tripuraneni is without doubt a highly talented filmmaker, but everything in this great debut direction is on its place. Everyone involved in Memories of Tomorrow should be proud of their work.
